What's the 2025 Audi A5 All About?

When you come to us looking for an Audi A5 for sale, you’ll find two different 2025 models available; they have some things in common but also some major differences. So today, we thought it would be helpful to take a good look at these two models, focus on what each of them has to offer, and explain the key differences between them. We’ll also talk a bit about the A5 Coupe and A5 Cabriolet models that you might be looking for and that you may have discovered are missing for the 2025 model year. Don’t worry; things aren’t as complicated as they might seem, so let’s dig in!

To keep things simple, we’re going to take this one step at a time when it comes to understanding the current Audi lineup and how the A5 fits into it. The 2025 Audi A5 is an all-new model and the start of a new generation for the A5. This marks the third generation for this vehicle since it was introduced for the 2008 model year, with a full redesign and some notable changes (we’ll get into them more as we go). Although simply referred to as the A5, this is not the two-door model you might be used to. Instead, it is a four-door sedan with a practical liftback design that includes absolutely gorgeous styling. Alongside the all-new Audi A5, you’ll also find the 2025 Audi A5 Sportback, which is where a lot of confusion comes from. This is a carryover model from last year that is still a part of the second generation. The A5 Sportback has a similar overall design to the new A5, combining the refined looks and sleek style of a fastback with a large trunk and functional rear access that opens like a hatchback. This creates an incredibly versatile vehicle that’s fun to drive, with stunning features throughout the cabin—but it’s still a second-generation A5 and not the all-new model.

Powering the A5 Sportback is a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that delivers up to 261 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, which allows it to go from zero to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds. This is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission for an incredibly sporty drive, along with quattro all-wheel drive that keeps you in control every moment you’re on the road. Inside the A5 Sportback, you’ll find an Audi virtual cockpit system featuring a customizable digital instrument cluster on a 12.3-inch display, with three modes you can select from. This is joined by a 10.1-inch Multi Media Interface (MMI) display that’s easy to use and connect to your smartphone, while an available 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system surrounds you with stunning 3D sound.

The major thing that Audi fans will quickly notice when looking at the 2025 lineup is that these are the only two A5 models available. Notably absent are the A5 Coupe and A5 Cabriolet models that have been a part of this lineup since it was first introduced more than 15 years ago. Audi has officially discontinued them, which leaves only four-door versions of the A5; the new A5 also serves to replace the now-discontinued Audi A4 sedan. Audi is switching to a new naming convention in which models with even numbers will be electric, while odd numbers will designate those with gas engines; so if the A4 returns, then it will be an EV. For now, there’s no word on whether we’ll see two-door versions of the A5 make a return in the years ahead.
